Queer Justice

The Queer Justice Project

The Queer Justice Project (QJP, queerjustice.ca) is designed to address unmet legal needs of the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit (‘queer’) communities in Hamilton. It serves as a resource for education, system navigation, and access to justice for queer people. QJP centres the experience of community members living in the margins and intersections. This includes queer newcomers, queer people with disabilities, queer street workers, queer people of colour and Two Spirit people. These communities historically and presently have experienced the law as a tool of oppression, and QJP aims to educate how the law can be wielded in an empowering way.

Trans ID Clinics

We assist trans-identified individuals in obtaining documentation that correctly reflects their name and gender.

For people who are transgender, having ID that correctly reflects their name and gender is not simply a matter of accuracy; it is a matter of dignity.

The lack of proper ID can pose barriers and create stigma when accessing education, medical care, receiving mental health services, applying for social assistance, securing housing and employment, opening bank accounts, voting and traveling.

Services we offer:

  • Assistance with navigating the bureaucratic process and completing applications correctly;
  • Providing free notarial services;
  • Peer support;
  • We are currently able to provide financial assistance to cover the costs related to completing this process for those community members who identify those fees as a barrier to them being able to complete the process or to completing it as quickly as they would like;
  • For more complicated situations, we may be able to provide further legal support

Where are the ID clinics held?

Our Trans ID Clinics are hosted at the Hamilton Community Legal Clinic – 100 Main St. E., Suite 203, Hamilton, ON.
